The Underground's success depends on the number of artists and spectators (people who experience art) that actively participate in creating and spreading art. Here are some things that you can do to be an active member of the Underground.
1. Leave art in public places.
Make copies of drawings, paintings, photographs, poetry, prose, three-dimensional art (as a photograph), sheet music or any other kind of art that you can think of. This can be either something that you've created or something that you really liked and have the artist's permission to redistribute. Then write "Visit the Underground at http://theunderground.artistoftomorrow.org." somewhere on the page, making sure not to obscure the art itself, and leave the copies in public places (like bulletin boards, gas stations, parks, etc.). Please only leave copies or replicas, not the original piece.
Before you decide to leave Underground art for people to see, make sure not to break any national or local laws about littering. If you are going to leave something on a park bench, make sure that it stays on the bench and won't blow away in the wind.
2. Pass it on.
If you come across an Underground notebook, take the time to add something of your own and pass it on. You can also release Underground notebooks into your community--more information here.
3. Take pictures.
If you have a camera with you, please take some photos of Underground art that you leave in public places or happen to see and email them to us.
4. Redistribute art.
One of the best things about art is that it doesn't expire. So when you see Underground art, don't just throw it away after looking at it. Instead, take a picture of it, then move it somewhere else so that more people have a chance to experience it. This allows art to reach more people while saving valuable resources like paper and ink.
5. Tell people about the Underground.
If for some reason you can't personally participate in the Underground, it's okay. You can still let people who have the capacity to spread art know about the Underground and help them spread their and others' art.
The rest is up to you. Be resourceful, be creative, and, above all, be artistic. There is no specific formula for successfully spreading art, so if you have an idea that you don't see here, please contact us to let us know what it is. Thank you for your help!
